John Samuel Wood
John is a brass instrumental teacher, conductor, tuba player and Denis Wick Educational Ambassador based on the Isle of Man and until recently, held the position of Principal Tuba with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra; South Africa’s leading professional symphony orchestra.
After studying at Chetham’s School of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music and Royal Academy of Music, John worked with some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras and ensembles including the Hallé Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra Brass Ensemble, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra, Macao Orchestra, Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra, Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Black Dyke Brass Band. John held the position of Principal Tuba with the China Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra in Beijing for their 2010/11 season and during his time in China, made many recordings for television and movie soundtracks including recording the music for the most watched television programme of all time; the CCTV Chinese New Year Gala Show. A passionate educator, John has taught at renowned institutions including the Junior Royal Academy of Music, China Central Conservatory of Music, China Conservatory of Music, Dulwich College International School of Beijing and Durban School of Music to mention a few. He is currently the brass instrumental teacher at King William’s College and teaches brass for the Isle of Man Music Service, where he also conducts the Manx Youth Concert Wind Orchestra.
